Sandwiched into their room was a double bed and a bureau, and the bathroom was even smaller. Ernesto laughed. “I think our friend Hugo is a master of understatement.” He turned to Gabriella. She stood in the open doorway, an odd look on her face.

“I’m sorry. This is pretty bad, isn’t it? We could try and find another place.”

She looked frightened but put on a brave face. Ernesto went to shut the door, then wrapped her in his arms. “Tranquilo, mariposa, it’s going to be okay.” He felt so relieved they were finally together again; he couldn’t imagine why she was upset. They sat on the edge of the bed. He took her hand in his and waited.

“I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that you’re alive,” she said. “I lost you once. What if I lose you again? And what makes us think we can outrun my uncle now that he’s out of prison? You heard the gunshots at the house. His men probably killed that agent.”

“You’re not going to lose me,” Ernesto assured her. “This time, we’re going to beat your uncle. The last four years, I missed you every second of every single day, mariposa. I’m not willing to live without you anymore. I’m here now. No one is going to hurt you ever again.”

She turned her head slowly to look at him, and he was heartened to see her eyes light up. He leaned over to kiss her gently on the lips, feeling the connection that always set his body on fire. He wanted her, but he didn’t want to push. “How about we get some sleep?” he suggested. “It’s been a long day for both of us.” More like a long four years, he thought as he watched her get ready for bed.
